The Wildlife of Orkney’s Coasts and Seas takes us on a unique and colourful safari. It begins by exploring Orkney’s windswept cliffs, where the land begins to fall away, and ends on the sea-horizon. Our travel takes us across rocky, muddy and sandy shores, through rock pools, salt marshes, saline lagoons and estuaries. We visit the undersea world of kelp forests, reefs, seagrass meadows and sediments. Lastly, we tour the horizon’s open water, home to migrant cetaceans, pelagic seabirds and fish.
Tim Dean and Anne Bignall have devoted the last eight years to compiling The Wildlife of Orkney’s Coasts and Seas. Anne has created 64 plates depicting 11 different habitats and numerous additional illustrations. Over 500 species have been painted and described many of which sit within readily identifiable and sometimes iconic Orkney locations.
