Matthew Forster Heddle Mineralogist and Moutaineer
This biography chronicles the personal and professional life of Orkney-born Matthew Forster Heddle (1828-97), one of Scotland’s most famous mineralogists. His legacy includes The Mineralogy of Scotland, and more than 5700 specimens now in the National Museums Scotland collection. Written by Heddle’s great-great-grandson, the book combines several years' original research and family records to create the first full biography of a larger-than-life man, against the historical, social, scientific and educational background of mid- to late nineteenth century Scotland.
